Chinese Food - OMAKASE ... Divine!!!

Image
You put forward the word degustation, and immediately its fine dining and you are preparing to pay at least RM300-500pp, same for Omakase which is chef's choice in Japanese restaurants. This restaurant is the best discovery for the longest time, and you have to call to book first, and say you want Omakase as the chef would have to shop diligently for freshest ingredients. paku pakis, blanched cold till crispy with sour chilli sauce, topped with prawn oil butter  8/10 easily my favourite dish, the soup was amazing, 8 hours with 3 different birds/bones as stock, and complements the melt in your mouth cabbage  10/10  slow blanched pork belly, with cucumber and ginger (which gave it a lift)  9/10  crispy chicken skin, the meat was actually fish ... Sek Yuen does this a bit better, but good nonetheless   7.5/10 I would call this a salad, well done eggplant plus squid and okra  8/10  The place is known as Xiao Lao Wang hotpot restaurant, hence...

The "Kong Luoi" Debate

Image
This phenomena not only dominates HK social scene but seems to be just as pervasive in Malaysia and Singapore. A few years back,  there have been a huge backlash and debate on the Internet and even mainstream media on the unacceptable attitudes of some HK girls. Girls who fit the description are called "Kong Luoi " (short for HK girls but with a derogatory sideswipe at them). Its a generalisation and not all girls will have all the attributes, but you will recognise them immediately. "Kong Luoi " (KLs) phenomenon was started as the 63.8 incident. The girl expected the guy to pay but he did not and she ended up paying HK $63.80. That was not the end of it. The girl recorded a video and uploaded it on You Tube ranting and bitching what an asshole and cheap the guy was for not offering to pay HK $63.80. Her berating video pi...

Dangerous Liaisons With Alibaba and Tencent

Image
Thanks to Alibaba and Tencent, the Chinese markets are headed for "something big". I cannot determine just what it will be but it will be big and probably disastrous. This all stem from the might and size of both companies.  Just how powerful are they? They are like the genie who can determine who will get rich. Both companies have invested liberally and sporadically into almost everything internet in China. Tencent is a bit faster in investing in viable startups, probably as an extension of monetising its 1 billion over WeChat users. There are about 77 private Chinese internet companies valued at $1bn or more that are owned by Tencent and Alibaba. Together they have a cash hoard of over $60bn. Here are just some of these billion dollar startups, which should be listing in the near future (within the next 2 years) that have been partially or substantially funded by the two giants: China Literature $6.2bn (Tencent) Didi $56bn (T & A) Ele.me $9.5bn (Alibaba) Meituan $30bn (...
